Instead of inscribing a new fate, she erased his existing one, rejecting the plan of the Night Watch's leader, Boris Ignatievich, and choosing to remain human rather than ascend to the ranks of the Great Ones. This act of erasure, performed in the eye of a magical hurricane, resolved the central ethical conflict of the novel and redefined her relationship with Anton Gorodetsky.

The Climax on the Roof

On the roof of the house on stilts, the same location where the Night Watch had confronted Zabulon months earlier, Svetlana stood in a white dress, her hair loose, holding a small box of white morocco leather. Inside was the Chalk of Destiny, a tiny, worn-down stub that had been used for millennia by Light Magicians to alter the course of history. Gesar, the head of the Night Watch, had orchestrated the entire operation, bringing together Svetlana, Egor, and the Inquisitor Maxim, who had granted permission for the intervention. The Dark Magician Zabulon was present as an observer, his objections denied. A hurricane, a byproduct of the immense magical tension, raged around them, tearing at their clothes and threatening the city below. Svetlana drew a protective circle with the chalk and began to extract the Book of Destiny from the deepest levels of the Twilight, a model made of fiery threads that hung motionless in the air, sizzling as raindrops touched it.

The Choice to Erase

As the hurricane intensified, Svetlana hesitated. She called out to Anton, who had arrived on the roof after gathering immense Power from the happiness of strangers, asking him what she should do. Anton, having used all that Power on himself in a remoralization spell, refused to give her advice, telling her she must decide for herself. He said, "We all create our own destinies." Svetlana then turned back to the Book of Destiny. Instead of writing a new destiny for Egor, she swept her hand through the air, and the pages rustled under a blinding eraser. The Chalk of Destiny fell from her hand, landing heavily on the roof. The Book of Destiny began to dissolve. Egor staggered and fell, curled into a ball. Gesar shouted in dismay, "You didn't write anything! Svetlana, you only erased things!"

Consequences and Revelation

Gesar declared that Svetlana had missed her chance, that the test was over. Svetlana replied, "Light One Gesar, I do not wish to serve in the Watch. I'm sorry, Light One Gesar, but it's not my path. Not my destiny." Zabulon, observing the failure, laughed and departed through a portal, mocking the entire affair. In the aftermath, Anton realized that the entire operation had been a feint. Gesar confessed that his true goal was not to change Egor's destiny, but to force the higher authorities to fully restore Olga's powers and pardon her, so that she could become his equal. The entire elaborate plan, including the sacrifice of the courier from Samarkand, was a personal gambit driven by his love for Olga.

Thematic Significance

Svetlana's choice to erase rather than rewrite represents a fundamental rejection of the utilitarian ethics that govern the Watches. Earlier in the novel, she had been horrified to learn that the Night Watch allowed licensed vampires to hunt humans, and that the Treaty between Light and Darkness required a balance of Good and Evil. By refusing to impose a new destiny on Egor, she refused to treat a human being as a means to an end, even a noble one. Her act of erasure was not a failure of power, but a deliberate assertion of her own moral agency. She chose to remain an ordinary Light Magician, preserving her humanity and her love for Anton, rather than becoming a Great Sorceress who would be forced to sacrifice her personal connections for the sake of an abstract, and potentially disastrous, plan to reshape the world.
